Abstracting in the Italian Landscape
In September 2008 join Peter Griffen, known as one of Australia’s leading abstract painters, on an artistic adventure at Villa Madonna, Cottanello, Italy.

Peter invites you to join him in the studio at Villa Madonna for ten days of free thinking, experimental, abstract painting and semi-abstract still life and en plein air painting. Many techniques using acrylic paint are demonstrated with a particular emphasis on composition, line and strong colour.

The villa overlooks the medieval walled hill town of Cottanello founded in 570 A.D. In this north eastern region of Sabina, on the Umbrian border, you find yourself in a corner of Italy as yet unspoiled by the advance of commercial tourism.

Discover the area of Sabina—explore with Peter medieval villages and ancient monuments, appreciate the textures of the Italian landscape and get lost in the flavours of the local food and wine. Join Peter on this creative journey and let him awaken your passion for joyous free-form expression.
“I believe that to make discoveries, risks must be taken. The traveller must get lost. A well planned journey can only lead to an already known destination. At some stage the painting must get out of control”.

Peter exhibits and teaches throughout the Eastern States of Australia and New Zealand, and now he has extended his workshops to Italy. He has had over 50 exhibitions in Australia and Europe, and his work has been hung in the Sulman, Dobell and Fleurieu Peninsula Biennale.
